As Christianity spread it became firmly established in the Roman Empire. The emporer Constantine, the first Christian roman emperor, played a major part in resolving the conflicts that were emerging regionally by calling a synod to resolve the differences and establish a common theology. In the eleventh century a great split between the bishops in the east and the west led to a schism that exists today and the universal catholic church split into the Orthodox Church or Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The Orthodox Church as remained true to its early tradittions and keeps as its symbol the tradditional three bar cross or Orthodox cross. The Orthodox cross pendant is often highly embelished with ornamental designs but keep the three bar form. It is also common to see the Orthodox Cross on the dome of Eastern Orthodox Churches in Russia and the former communist block countries.
